The first-year Broadcast Media Studies students start off their four-year degree program with audio writing and production courses. They begin to discover very early on in the program that they are storytellers and that even everyday adventures can make a good story.
This podcast is called Adventure Awaits. It features students sharing stories about their commutes to school. Sometimes the stories focus on the bone-chilling cold, sometimes it’s about the weird things you find at a bus top and sometimes it’s about hopping a fence instead of taking the long way.
The students invite you to take a listen:
*****
Episode One: We hear a student rage against the buses which are scheduled, but don’t arrive on schedule; a student who lives on campus but still can’t make it to school on time; and October snowstorms.
*****
Episode Two: In this episode we hear several stories, including how one student’s morning starts out poorly until his Dad gives him the keys to the car. As well, a kindhearted student reaches out to another transit passenger who’s crying
*****
Episode Three: Oh dear – this is an interesting episode. In one story – a student finds a “surprise” at the bus stop.
*****
Episode Four: This episode includes a rant about Snowtember and Garrett describes his early-morning bus ride which is made bearable if only he can find a warm seat.
*****
Episode Five: Many fun stories here – starting with one from a student who describes how he’s just a little bit sad that the Canadian Geese just ignore him as he walks to school.
*****
Episode Six: More great stories, including one about a “close call” with a truck, a mother shouting and a son reassuring her he’s got the vehicle under control!
*****
Episode Seven: Some students have really long commutes because they live outside the city. In this episode – one student decides the commute isn’t worth the risk on a very snowy day.
*****
Episode Eight: In our final episode we have several stories about the challenges of commuting in the winter. For instance: Can your outfit be on point and still be warm?
