Our new DJ’s
The first-year Broadcast Media Studies students go on air starting November, 15. Here’s a little bit about them.
Ayden Bragg is self-described as indecisive. Some may see this as negative but Ayden views it differently. Ayden’s indecisiveness has led him to try more than the average person. All the way up to this third year of his post-secondary career, he has been enrolled in classes such as linguistics, marketing, and even anatomy. Taking these classes has brought Ayden from his home town of Swift Current, to Medicine Hat College, and finally here at Mount Royal to try his hand at broadcast media studies. In the program Ayden is interested in learning skills, he can apply to his passion for film and hopes this is his final stop. But hey, if this doesn’t work out there’s always plan B; which in Ayden’s case happens to be the dream of becoming a private pilot.

A couple of Caleb’s favorite places are Montana and Arizona. He likes the mountains and fresh air but at the same time, despises snowy and cold weather. Caleb joined the broadcasting program because he is intrigued by the media industry, but doesn’t have a passion for writing, so he thought that this might be a good option in the field.

Kailie spends her free time watching movies and behind the scenes videos of her favourite shows. She cannot wait for all the new adventures this year will bring.
Hello, Kevin Thorn is a first year Broadcast Media student, this program appealed to him because he loves to work with media production technology. Since the first time he got to play around with a lighting board in junior high drama class, he knew he had a knack for it and wanted to learn more. His first love was filmmaking, probably in large part because it is an often romanticized and mystified craft. In reality, it’s anything but romantic. Since then, he’s had some opportunities to work in both live TV production and film and can say for sure that TV was a more pleasant working environment (not that there aren’t any nice film crews out there). After a few years being away from this passion, the drive has not wavered and he’s happy to be getting another shot at it.
Bringing some West Coast flavour to Calgary is Lauren Angman, who moved here from Vancouver Island when she was 8. Can’t go wrong with comedy, action, sci-fi, and superheroes. Maybe even a little rom com. If you ever want to talk about anything she’s seen or listened to, you bet she has a lot to say about them. Since she was a kid she’s been fascinated by the storytelling, production, and the talent behind it all. Besides school and watching her favs; she likes reading comics, drawing, even experimenting in animation and voice acting just for fun. Broadcasting caught her eye with how versatile the program is. She wants to learn how to tell her own stories and create her own content. Mae wants to pursue something fun and creative in the future in entertainment.

Hello there. For those who have never heard the name Marcus Hollingsworth, here are the basics of what you need to know. Basically, he’s just your everyday nerd. Video games, anime, movies; he’s basically into it all. Of course, don’t get him started on any of these or else he’ll spout some argument he’s been repeating in his head for years. He especially loves learning how these things are made, and how he can shoddily make them himself with his crappy laptop. Nevertheless, he strives to improve his skills daily (when he has the mental fortitude to do so) because of the belief taught to him by his legendary swim coach “you get better every day”. Marcus Hollingsworth is a guy that can either be Mopey, High strung or outrageously bombastic but to his confusion no matter what he’s like people still end up having a good time.

Nickozs Labitoria is an amateur photographer and professional nerd and geek. He has recently been doing amateur shoots with friends and local businesses as well as having the opportunity to go on shoots with my uncle, an actual published photographer. He used to run an online store where he sells cameras, which has given him the opportunity to try his hand in digital advertising. But aside from his worryingly massive collection of cameras, video games and cassettes, he is also obsessed with videography as an art form as visual arts and writing has been a lifelong passion of his, which he will brag helps a lot in his biweekly Dungeons & Dragons sessions. He only hopes that his life’s experiences, interests and hobbies resonate with at least one person out there and that it makes for a decent enough talk.
Noah Laycock’s party trick is telling everyone to find a chemical with the flammable symbol on the container, swishing it around his mouth and spitting into a lighter, creating a massive fireball. Laycock enjoys living on the edge that Hunter S Thompson described while riding with the Hells Angels. Charles Bukowski said, “Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead.” An avid appreciator of film, Laycock is fascinated with how new media can sharpen our worldviews. Laycock aims to be a force for unification on-air, steering away from politics and into passions. Rock climbing, drone flying, playing guitar, making love and disregarding taboos to name a few.

He spends most of his time playing video games like Call of Duty Warzone, which he is bad at and The Burning Crusade Classic which he acts like he’s good at. He also likes all types and genres of music, some of which could be argued that it’s not music at all but rather a horrendous conglomeration of noises. Selome realized Broadcast Media Studies offers many different opportunities and career paths that she could pursue after completing this degree. Hope you enjoyed it, have a great day!
Hello, my name is Taylor Boisvert. I am currently a first-year broadcast and media studies student. The reason I chose this degree is quite simple, I absolutely love sports and one of my dreams as a kid was to become a sports broadcaster or do something in sports at some capacity for my career. I am from a small town in BC called Vernon, so I am still getting adjusted to city life here in Calgary. My favorite sports growing up were basketball, soccer, skiing and most recently golf, which is way more frustrating than I thought. I also have a deep interest in music and it’s cool to possibly be able to do something with that through these radio shows that we are doing. I am excited to learn about different music genres. Another reason why I like this program so much is that it is so broad and there are so many different opportunities for my future not only in sports but other areas of the industry as well. I hope I find a stable career after this degree in either spots or music or maybe in something I haven’t learned yet. I am excited to see what the future holds.
Hey, my name is Terril Orsten. I’m originally from St. Paul, but I’ve lived most of my life in Claresholm Alberta. If you imagine a middle-class white guy, you’re probably thinking of someone like me. I collect records (shocking), most of which are rap. I used to play a bunch of sports, but the football gods decided someone else needed a meniscus (one of the things that holds your knee together) so they took mine in my freshman year. This didn’t affect my passion for sports, so I’ll definitely be down to talk about football and baseball or listen to you talk about a sport I don’t know a whole lot in. As I already mentioned, I listen almost exclusively to rap music. Some of my favourite artists right now are Kanye, Denzel Curry, Zillakami and Baby Keem. Hopefully Kendrick drops in the near future so he can return to the top of that list. So, if anyone needs someone to laugh at for his lack of knowledge in a genre, or someone to learn about a new one alongside them, I’m your guy.
An avid Truman Bartman is 19 years old and he was born and raised in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He has a very strong passion for sports and speaking about sports. He has a deep connection with the people that are in his corner and deeply cares about those individuals. He has a love for travel and exploring new places. He has taken several trips with his family to various locations such as Germany,Arizona and Toronto. It’s always fun for him to travel because he feels like It gives him a better outlook on life. Lastly, Truman loves to be active. He works at a golf course during the summer and tends to spend more time golfing than actually working.

Wil Brennan is a student of Broadcast Media Studies. Coming from the small town of Stettler, Alberta, living in Calgary is a bit out of the ordinary for him. He’s been interested in broadcast media for a while now starting in High School with a monthly video skit show called Cat Corner. He is very passionate about sports and being active, whether it be snowboarding, playing basketball, volleyball, golf, or spikeball. Most days you’ll find Wil watching the Toronto Raptors in hopes of winning another championship. Music is super important to Wil’s everyday life. Not a day goes by without him jamming out to some Kanye West or Mac Miller. Cooking is something Wil has gotten into because he finds himself with an empty wallet when he relies on fast food to fill his gut.
Yasmin Lee is a first-year student in the Broadcast Media Studies program and is interested in the sports side of broadcasting and much more. She was inspired to explore this path because of the first all-women’s broadcasting team, for the Toronto Raptors also because she would create videos all the time when she was younger. However, she isn’t set on a certain path yet but is ready to explore everything this journey has to offer. Most importantly Yasmin has a passion for anything basketball related, along with skiing and snowboarding. Also, a key point is how she has a vast sneaker collection which means she is the one to talk to about shoe game.

He was born in Halifax, NS and moved to Calgary when he was 9 years old, where he graduated from Henry Wise Wood High School in 2014. After graduating, he attended the Biology program at the University of Victoria for 3 years before deciding to leave school to work and travel. When he was coming back to post-secondary school in Calgary, he decided to swap microscopes for microphones in order to pursue his passions of audio and video production. Kaamil has a strong passion for most sports (especially Soccer), he loves most genres of music (especially Hip-Hop), and of course he loves TV and Films (especially The Goonies).
Darren Plett is a fourth year Broadcast Media Studies student at MRU with a passion for sports. Hey I’m Harris Turner. I’m not the most talented, hard working or best student out there but I try my best. I’m a huge music nut and tend to get carried away with explaining the meaning of a song. I love to draw, make my own music and edit videos in my free time. Sometimes I voice act but I don’t get many roles. One day I hope to become a sound designer because of how versatile it is and it’s something that I would love to do. After all, why do something if you don’t enjoy it?
William Whaley studies Broadcast Media at Mount Royal University. His biggest dream is to bike down a cobblestone street by the ocean at approximately 7 p.m. so that the temperature is warm but not too warm. Preferably somewhere in Europe because the houses look really pretty so it would make for a really nice backdrop to the side of the street that isn’t the ocean. If that doesn’t give you all the information you need about me I don’t know what will.
