Community funded Madison’s 1212 is showing how to run a successful restaurant without the waste of paper. Having opened last summer, the owners Jared Salekin and Pieter Boekhoff made a conscious decision to create a restaurant that was both tech savvy and eco-friendly. Their main focus was going paperless.
Having switched from the typical pen and paper style of serving, here are some of the Apple run applications that keep Madison’s 1212 a smooth running business.
- Touch Bistro
- No Wait
- 7 Shifts
- Skip the Dishes
- Foodora
- Square
- Chromecast
- Door Dash
Touch Bistro is the main application that runs off of an Apple iPad and affords the server the luxury of bringing a tablet to the table, taking the order, and then immediately sending it to the kitchen digitally and efficiently. This saves time as for the server doesn’t have to hand-write on a notepad and physically walk it to the kitchen. This also saves on notepads and therefore ultimately, on paper and cost.
The other important app is Skip the Dishes. It is a simple delivery application that anyone with a smart phone is able to download and therefore, is able order off of the Madison’s menu online. It is then wirelessly sent to a special iPad in the kitchen where it is prepared by the cooks to have a Skip the Dishes delivery driver come and pick it up.
Of course, the apps do have their faults such as the system crashing, Wi-Fi interference, or even broken tablets. However, the good still outweigh the bad and the impact of paper waste on the environment is minimal.
The restaurant also has unique Dyson hand dryers instead of paper towels and iMirrors that at first glance look like a mirror however, has a television behind it for entertainment. It’s all wireless of course.
